In a world increasingly dependent on energy efficiency, material sustainability and redesign and reuse rather than new design, the SMART Competition invites high school students to become part of the solution. By undertaking the project described in the competition’s problem statement, the students will have the opportunity to use professionally available design software while also having access to international experts who will support their efforts as mentors and sponsors.
The SMART Competition challenges international teams of high school age students to redesign a gymnasium on an existing high school campus. The redesign must incorporate sustainable materials and efficient energy concepts while ensuring functionality and affordability of their design.
The teams will be tasked with developing a physical and computer model of their design while also authoring a written report that highlights creative design features, energy use solutions and localized power generation methods used to complete the project. Additionally, they will be required to develop a set of actionable recommendations that can be presented to school officials.
Teams are comprised of 3-4 students and an educator sponsor. Registration begins in October 2013 and closes January 17th, 2014 CHANGED TO February 3, 2014. All other deliverable dates will be extended by two weeks.
Registered teams will then be given a deliverables schedule which will help them prepare for participation in a regional competition.
At the regional finals, the student teams will present their scale model, animated software model, and written research report to a panel of expert subject matter Judges. The winning regional team will participate in the international competition in May.
